At the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence, Paul McCartney Photographs, 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm offers a view of Beatlemania from inside the whirlwind. More than 250 photographs taken by McCartney during the band’s rapid ascent capture the Beatles on the road, backstage and in the brief pauses between public appearances.

The images began as a personal record. In 2020, nearly a thousand photographs McCartney had made with a 35mm camera were rediscovered in his archives. Together, they trace the Beatles’ journey from Liverpool and London in late 1963 to Paris, then to the United States in February 1964—a trip that coincided with the band’s breakthrough to a vast American audience. Their performance on The Ed Sullivan Show was watched by around 73 million viewers.

Rather than seeing the group only through the cameras pointed at them, visitors encounter McCartney’s own perspective. His photographs take in his bandmates, the crowds and press following them, and the everyday details of travel and touring. Some pictures feel spontaneous; others are more carefully framed. Taken together, they show both the excitement of sudden fame and the ordinary moments unfolding behind it.

The exhibition follows the journey in chronological sections, from McCartney’s early interest in photography through Liverpool and London, Paris, New York, Washington and Miami. This structure turns the photographs into a visual diary of a changing band and a changing era, capturing the Beatles as their lives shifted from local success to global attention.

Curated by Paul McCartney with Sarah Brown for MPL Communications Limited and Rosie Broadley for the National Portrait Gallery in London, the exhibition brings together music history and personal observation. At Musée Granet, Eyes of the Storm invites visitors to look beyond the familiar public image of the Beatles—and see the extraordinary moment through the eyes of one of its participants.

Paul McCartney photographe, 1963-64: Eyes of the Storm
